The historical city of Jaisalmer is all set to organize the colourful and most attractive Desert Festival from 8th February to 10th February, 2017 at Sam Sand Dunes. This festival is organized by the Rajasthan State Tourism Corporation and one of the most visited festival of Jaisalmer City.
The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is an annual event that takes place in February month at the beautiful desert city of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. It is held in the Hindu month of Magh, three days prior to the full moon. The festival is celebrated amidst the beautiful dunes of the Thar Desert in the Sam Dunes, which is 40 km away from Jaisalmer.
This is a 3-day event showcasing the heritage and culture of Rajasthan. The Desert Festival in Jaisalmer was started as a marketing idea to attract local and foreign tourists interested in exploring the rich and colorful heritage of Rajasthan and its folk culture in a short period of time. This festival showcases a variety of Rajasthani folk songs and dance to promote Jaisalmer culture and traditions. The folk music has been influenced by the bordering Sindh region of Pakistan, and has evolved over many centuries.
This extravaganza includes of a lot of events such as puppet shows, various competitions such as tug of war and Biggest Moustache, camel race, various folk performance and more. During this time, the desert comes alive with the sound and light show, dance and music. The Jaisalmer Fort acts as an ethereal backdrop of this festival.
The festival begins with a ceremonial procession, locally known as Shobha Yatra where local Rajputs and other clans dress in their traditional attire. Men carrying swords atop horses, camels, and elephants are cheered on as they enter the Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium, one of the main venues of the desert festival. Thousands of visitors from across the globe make the desert trek to enjoy the various events that take place during the festival. A trip to the Sam Sand Dunes marks the grand finale, where you will enjoy camel rides and brilliant performance by the folk artist under the full moon against the backdrop of picturesque dunes.
