Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of Char Dham highway project in Uttarakhand. The highway network along the Char Dham got severely devastated following cloudburst there in 2013. The Modi Government decided to upgrade the national highways network in the upper Himalayan region.
The Prime Minister will address a public meeting in Dehradun during his Uttarakhand visit. Char Dham highway project will lead to creation of over 900 km of roads. Connectivity and tourism will get a strong boost through the project, said the Prime Minister. Adding of bypasses, tunnels, bridges and flyovers will ease travel. Proper slope stabilization will ensure protection against landslides, he had said pointing out towards ensuring uninterrupted all weather safe journey for pilgrims to the four shrines.
The Char Dham Yatra is an annual pilgrimage to the shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The 900 km road once constructed with an investment of Rs 12,000 crore will ensure round-the-year, hassle free travel to these shrines and the famous Sikh shrine Hemkund Saheb also. The cost would include civil construction as well as land acquisition, forest clearance and utility shifting. Work on the project amounting to Rs 3000 crore has already been started under the Char Dham programme.
The work was initiated in March when Gadkari launched the “All Weather Road Project”. The project is going to ensure cemented roads that will have no potholes for the next 200 years. The roads will have 2 tunnels, 15 flyovers, 13 alignments at the landslide zone, 25 large bridges and 18 passenger service centers and 13 by-pass.
Apart from widening, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry plans to improve the stretches to two-lane carriageway with highlighting landslide hazard zones, constructing of bypasses, long bridges, tunnels and elevated corridors, and an “all-weather road” to ensure safety for the users. The roads leading to Gangotri and Badrinath are also equally important because of the link to defence establishment.
